Rep. Louie Gohmert: We Had Votes to Defeat Boehner

By    |   Tuesday, 06 Jan 2015 09:16 PM

Rep. Louie Gohmert, who took part in Tuesday's effort to unseat House Speaker John Boehner, told Sean Hannity afterward that they had enough votes to succeed, but that most people backed out when it came time to make an official decision.

Appearing on Hannity's syndicated radio show,  Gohmert said he could tell GOP leadership was getting worried once they started frantically trying to get votes.

"They were whipping it hard. That's when we knew they are really concerned because they were making calls and were really putting the squeeze on people to vote for Boehner," Gohmert said.

In the end, Boehner was elected on the first round, garnering 216 votes. Republicans needed 29 votes against Boehner to force a second round. They got 24 with one Republican voting present. Gohmert got three of those votes.
