Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., blamed Democratic administrations' "policies of neglect" for the wildfires raging in the Western United States, burning nearly 5 million acres and killing at least 35 with many more missing.
"Every day, you see the damage of years of Democrat policies. Today, we see the fires ravaging the American west, fires that are there because of the policies of neglect — Democrat administrations leaving our forests to die," Cheney, the chair of the House GOP Conference, can be seen saying in a video posted on Twitter by The Hill on Tuesday afternoon.
The comments were made as part of an election push for President Donald Trump who is facing a tight reelection bid against Democrat Joe Biden and his running mate Sen. Kamala Harris of California.
Cheney's words echo those of Trump, who has blamed the fires of years of forest mismanagement. He brought the issue up during his meeting with California Gov. Gavin Newsom and other state officials.
Newsom admitted that mismanagement is an issue, but argued that climate change is the primary issue.
