Rejecting House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's, D-Calif., rush to impeach President Donald Trump, Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., called it a "political stunt" to withhold an impeachment she had deemed urgent, "trying to extort" a Senate trial to her liking.

"I find it a political stunt for Nancy Pelosi not to send the articles over," Graham told Fox News' "Sunday Morning Futures" with Maria Bartiromo. "Mitch McConnell is not going to let her run the Senate trial. Her time is over.

"It is now time for the Senate to dispose of these impeachment articles with a trial in the Senate."

The House passed articles of impeachment on abuse of power and obstruction of Congress, albeit only due to a Democrat-held majority. Every Republican voted against both articles, while two Democrats voted against both articles, one voted against one, and another – Democratic presidential primary candidate Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D-Hawaii – merely voted "present," declining to vote for or either article of impeachment.

"We're not going to let Nancy Pelosi use the rule of the Senate to her advantage," Graham added. "This is dangerous for the presidency as an institution."

Graham claimed Pelosi is engaging in an "abuse of power" and "constitutional extortion."

"They're trying to hold these articles over the head of the president," he added. "I think they're not sending them is they're so weak and it's a pathetic case and they're trying to add something.

"So, the sooner this trial's over the better for the American people."

Graham told Bartiromo he hoped the Senate impeachment trial would be over by the end of January, and he would work with Senate Majority Leader McConnell, R-Ky., to start a trial with or without the House articles from Pelosi in the "next couple of days."

"Not let Nancy Pelosi take over the Senate, my No. 1 goal is not let the speaker or the House become the majority leader of the Senate," Graham said.

"The abuse of power in this case is impeaching the president because you don't like him."
