Sen. Lindsey Graham said there are no winners in the government shutting down and encouraged President Donald Trump to take more of a leadership role in discussions.

"The military's losing. Everybody's losing," the South Carolina Republican said Monday, The Hill reported. "So the president needs to set a tone of being a leader for us all, and go back to his attitude… that we're going to do it together, we're going to do it with love, and we'll have security.

"If we keep that attitude, we'll get to yes. If we start blaming each other, and running ads against each other and blaming each other, we all lose," Graham said, but "if the president takes that tone, we will fall in place."

"They shouldn't have shut the government down. That's not a good way to negotiate. Blaming one party over the other in a shutdown never works," he added.

The Trump campaign on Saturday released ads tying Democrats to murders committed by illegal immigrants.
