President Donald Trump’s implicit endorsement of Senate candidate Roy Moore is an attempt “to throw a life line” to the embattled Alabama nominee amid sexual misconduct allegations, Sen. Lindsey Graham said Sunday.

In an interview on CNN’s “State of the Union,” the South Carolina Republican called Trump’s stance — that Moore “totally denies” the allegations and that electing a Democrat would be worse — a “political decision.”

“He's definitely trying to throw a lifeline to Roy Moore,” Graham said. “From a Republican point of view… I don't know what winning looks like for Roy Moore.

“If he wins, you get the baggage of him winning and it becomes a story every day about whether or not you believe the women or Roy Moore,” he continued. “If you lose, you give the Senate seat to a Democrat.”

“The moral of the story is, don't nominate somebody like Roy Moore who could actually lose a seat that any other Republican could win,” he said.

Graham added that his message to Trump would be simple.

“What I would tell President Trump, ‘If you think winning with Roy Moore is going to be easy for the Republican Party, you're mistaken,’” he said.

Graham refused to say Trump’s position was a “mistake.”

“I’m not going down the road he's going,” he said. “That's up to the president.”
