If President Donald Trump agrees to drop his demand for border wall funding, “that’s probably the end of his presidency,” according to South Carolina Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham.
“If he gives in now, that’s the end of 2019 in terms of him being an effective president, that’s probably the end of his presidency,” Graham said on Fox News’ “Hannity” Wednesday night.
The government entered a partial shutdown almost two weeks ago, after Democrats refused to approve $5 billion for a wall.
“If he gives in now, that’s the end of 2019 in terms of him being an effective president,” he continued later.
“That’s probably the end of his presidency. Donald Trump has made a promise to the American people: he’s going to secure the border. Every Democrat in the past has voted for border funding, now they’re changing their mind. That’s the end of us if we give in on this issue as Republicans.”
Graham added that he hopes incoming Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, who publicly criticized Trump in a recent op-ed, “and everybody else knows, this is a fight worth having.”
The senator later said that Trump will “challenge the Democrats to compromise, and if they continue to say no, they’re going to pay a price with the American people. Most Americans want to do two things: they want to secure our border and they want to be reasonable to the people like the DACA [Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals] population.”
