Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., praised Rex Tillerson's service as secretary of state and said he's looking forward to working with his replacement, current CIA Director Mike Pompeo.

A short time after President Donald Trump announced on Twitter he nominated Pompeo to replace Tillerson as the nation's top diplomat, Graham weighed in with a statement posted to his social media accounts.

"I very much appreciate Secretary Tillerson's service to our nation as secretary of state. His efforts to reorganize and streamline the State Department — bringing its policies and practices into the 21st century — should continue," Graham said.

"Secretary Tillerson worked tirelessly on behalf of President Trump and should be proud of his tenure as secretary of state."

Regarding Pompeo, who served in the House from 2011-2017, Graham said he's a perfect pick to lead the State Department.

"I cannot think of a better choice for our new Secretary of State than Mike Pompeo," he said. "As director of the CIA, Mike has made contacts throughout the world and has come up with aggressive policies to defend our homeland. No one understands the threat posed by North Korea and Iran better than he does. He has made alliances that will benefit the United States and our allies."

Graham, a member of the Senate Appropriations, Armed Services, Budget, and Judiciary Committees, added that Pompeo's close relationship with Trump will be beneficial in his new role.

Replacing Pompeo as CIA director will be Gina Haspel, who has worked at the spy agency since 1985.

Pompeo and Haspel will have to be confirmed by the Senate for their new roles.
