Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., on Monday night downplayed chances that Russia investigation special counsel Robert Mueller would get fired, saying there’d be “holy hell to pay” if he was axed without cause. Democrats have called for legislation to protect Mueller.

"I don’t feel an urgent need to pass that law until you show me that Mr. Mueller is in jeopardy," he told reporters, The Hill reported hours after the first Mueller indictment was unsealed.

Graham conceded he would support the bill he and Democratic Sen. Cory Booker, N.J., sponsored in September requiring a judge to approve a Justice Department request to fire Mueller or any other special counsel.

Video of Graham’s remarks was posted by Fox News.

“I have zero concern Mr. Mueller is in jeopardy of losing his job,” adding: “If there was an effort to do it without evidence there’d be holy hell to pay… It would be wrong to do so without cause.”
