Democrats don't want to find a solution to illegal immigration because "they hate" President Donald Trump, and the only way around that is to send people to Washington who don't hate the president, Sen. Lindsey Graham insisted Tuesday.
"I have been working on immigration for 10 years," Graham told Fox News' "Fox and Friends." "I'm willing to deal with the DACA population, give them a place to stay in the country, a pathway to citizenship. I'm willing to spend money in Central America to make life better."
Graham said he's done " everything I know to do, turn blue in the face, but I can't get one Democrat to agree with me (that) you should apply for asylum in Central America, Mexico, not the United States, because we don't have the capability to deal with asylum claims."
He added that he can't get one Democrat who will agree to allow migrant children to be held humanely with their families while their claims are processed.
"They literally want them released in the United States," said Graham. "They will not work with me. They will not work with President Trump. I am dumbfounded why we can't find a compromise."
There are several states that have filed lawsuits against Trump's rule extending the length of time migrant children can be detained, and Graham said that's because those states support illegal immigration.
"If you come here and claim asylum and your hearing is three years away, you never show up," he argued. "We don't hold people for three years. All they have to do is ask for asylum. If you bring a minor child, we can only hold the child 20 days. "
