Rep. Lance Opposed Healthcare Bill Because of Exchanges

Rep. Leonard Lance, R-N.J., one of the Republicans who did not support passage of the healthcare bill, said the legislation did not do enough to fix the exchanges.

His comments came on MSNBC on Friday.

"I think the exchanges are not in good shape," he said. "We in New Jersey originally had five insurers for the exchange. We're now down to two. So, certainly we need to do a better job regarding healthcare in this country. "

But he said he had other concerns with the legislation, as well.

"I don't think this bill will lower premiums for average Americans," he said. "I'm also concerned about the pre-existing conditions issue. It's attempted to be addressed in this bill, but thoroughly enough from my perspective."

But he expects the Senate will make major changes in the bill.

"There is virtually a universal consensus that this bill is going to be modified significantly in the Senate," he said. "We do need reform of the system, but I don't think that his bill does that."

Even though his district supported Hillary Clinton in the presidential election by a slim majority, Lance said politics did not influence his decision to oppose the bill.

"There was not a political calculation," he said. "It was based on what I thought was best for the district. But I believe that my views are the views of the overwhelming majority of the district I serve. I always try to vote my conscience and vote what is in the best interest of my district I'm honored to serve."

Two Democratic candidates are already vying for his seat in New Jersey — and the election is still 18 months away, according to The Star Ledger.

And Lance added he hoped that as the bill moves through the Senate, Republicans and Democrats can come together to fix some of these issues he outlined.

"I also hope Democrats will come to the table," he said.
