President Donald Trump has to "get away from tweeting" and concentrate on the job of being president, former CIA director and Defense Secretary in the Obama administration Leon Panetta cautioned Thursday.

Trump's credibility with the American people is the key to his success,Panetta told Bloomberg's "What'd You Miss."

"This president has to get away from tweeting, concentrate on the job of being president of the United States, focus on making sure that what he says is true and is backed up by the facts," he warned.

"Because if he continues to operate the way he has over the last two months, I think we are in for a lot of trouble in the country in terms of the direction of the nation."

Panetta said Trump has to have "the trust of the American people to accomplish anything."

"If the president does not speak with truth, and not credibly, the president will not be very effective dealing with Congress or the American people," he said.

Panetta, who also has served as President Bill Clinton's chief of staff and as director of the Office of Management and Budget in his administration, said Trump's agenda will depend on developing a consensus in Congress.

"If the president really wants to achieve the legislative . . . proposals he is recommending, whether tax cuts or infrastructure spending or even the healthcare bill, he has got to be able to reach out and develop the kind of consensus necessary to get legislation through," he said.

"If you just rely on one side of the ledger, the Republican side, where you got 50 votes that will give you trouble almost with any bill you try – and the Senate will not accept a lot of this – I think the need right now is to find . . . a governing coalition that could make these things realistic."

"I don't see that happening now, he said. "I think the future, for that reason, is very unpredictable."
