Former Clinton Chief of Staff Leon Panetta said Thursday that Michael Wolff's upcoming book on President Donald Trump with explosive comments by former chief strategist Steve Bannon "confirms a lot of the conclusions that the press has come to over the last year."

"The president is someone who is not a deep thinker, not someone who has intellectual curiosity, experience both in government and international affairs," Panetta, who also served as Defense Secretary under former President Barack Obama, told Wolf Blitzer on CNN.

"He tends to react emotionally to the issues that he's dealing with.

"All of that has been covered by the press a great deal — and the fact that there are insiders in the White House, that adds credibility to what the press has been saying a long time."

Wolff said that he held 200 interviews with President Trump, Bannon and White House staffers for his book, "Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House."

Panetta told Blitzer that granting an author so much access set a "dangerous precedent" for future administrations.

"I can tell you that you usually shudder at the idea of having an author wandering around the West Wing," he said.

"I understand that if you give the author access, that somehow that author will write a very complementary book.

"That usually never happens," Panetta said.

"It's a dangerous precedent to allow people like that to wander around the White House and gather whatever facts they want and obviously write about it.

"I think they made a mistake."
