Leon Panetta: 'Nothing Gets Done' After Mass Shootings

Former CIA Director Leon Panetta said Thursday that "we all kind of follow a script . . . but, somehow, nothing ever gets done" after mass shootings in the U.S. in recent years.

"I'm glad that the president spoke to this tragic event that has taken place," Panetta, who served in the Obama White House, told Jake Tapper on CNN about President Donald Trump's speech on the Florida school massacre.

"But, I think all of us feel that . . . we all kind of follow a script now where the president says words of condolence, expresses deepest condolences to the family — says that it should never happen again — but, somehow, nothing ever gets done.

"Nothing gets done," he added. "I fear that we're caught in a cycle where these kinds of killings are going to continue and little is going to happen as a result."

President Trump, in a speech from the White House, said the nation "with one heavy heart" was praying for the victims and families of the 17 killed and 14 injured in the rampage at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

Panetta called for tighter restrictions on assault weapons, particularly regarding the mentally ill, and noted how the debate over bump stocks after the Las Vegas shootings last October soon fizzled because of legislative inaction.

"Something can be done to try to limit these assault weapons from getting into their hands and causing these kinds of danger," he said.

"We came out of the Las Vegas shooting, and everybody — the NRA, Republicans and Democrats — said we have to do something about bump stocks.

"Yet, nothing happened," Panetta told Tapper. "There's a real problem with political courage to do anything.

"No matter what we say needs to be done, unless the courage and leadership of those we elect to office is there to do something about it, nothing is going to happen."
