President Donald Trump has been in negotiations with key senators on both sides of the aisle on potential gun control legislation following the recent mass shootings in which more than 30 people were murdered, NBC News reported Wednesday.

This reportedly marked the most substantive discussions the Trump administration has had to date on the topic and includes talks with Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., one of the leading gun control advocates, along with two senators – Pat Toomey, R-Pa., and Joe Manchin, D-W.Va. – who wrote a 2013 background checks bill that failed to pass following the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

It is this model the White House is looking to follow, with the thinking, even though the legislation was not successful back then, it provides a good policy framework and bipartisan support.

Trump claimed last week he had "tremendous support" for possible new measures to tighten background checks on those who buy guns.

Aides to Rep. Doug Collins, R-Ga., the ranking member on the Judiciary Committee, have also been in talks with the White House over the issue, according to the Washington Examiner.

However, some experts are pouring cold water on the rhetoric, pointing out after the February 2018 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida the president at first gave indications he would back tightening background checks for those who purchase guns only to back away, NBC reported.

In addition, the Democratic-controlled House passed two bills that would have bolstered background checks in February, but the Republican-controlled Senate never took up debate on the legislation as Trump had promised to veto it.
