Rep. Lee Zeldin says it might be nice to have a military parade in Washington, D.C. – as President Donald Trump has suggested – but Congress would have to see how much it would cost first.

Zeldin, an Army vet, told CNN’s Don Lemon there should be a long-term funding plan in place for the military, rather than a series of continuing resolutions to keep the government open.

"The continuing resolutions are absolutely not the way to go, especially as it relates to funding the Department of Defense. Cost would be a factor," Zeldin, a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, said.

"And I don’t believe that we should have tanks and nuclear weapons going down Pennsylvania Avenue."

There were reports Tuesday that the White House told the Pentagon to plan for a large military parade this year to honor the troops and show off America’s strength.

"The marching orders were: I want a parade like the one in France," an unnamed military official told The Washington Post, which said such a parade could cost millions of dollars. "This is being worked at the highest levels of the military."

Republican lawmakers are pushing for a long-term funding solution for the military rather than stop-gap measures.

In response to reports about the planned parade, White House press secretary Sarah Sanders issued a statement saying: "President Trump is incredibly supportive of America’s great service members who risk their lives every day to keep our country safe … He has asked the Department of Defense to explore a celebration at which all Americans can show their appreciation."
