House Speaker Paul Ryan reportedly scrapped plans for a Wednesday fundraiser for the re-election campaign of Rep. Lee Zeldin, R-N.Y., after he voted against the House-passed GOP tax overhaul.

The cancellation was designed to punish Zeldin for both the "no" vote – and because he was an outspoken critic of the elimination of the federal deduction for state and local taxes, The New York Times reported, citing unnamed sources.

The campaign confirmed the cancellation to both the Times and The Hill.

The Wednesday fundraiser was held, but proceeds went to Ryan's political operation and the National Republican Congressional Committee rather than Zeldin's war chest, the outlets reported.

The Hill reported Ryan will still support Zeldin in the 2018 midterm elections, and an unnamed source insisted there are no "litmus tests" for Republicans seeking Ryan's support.

"It would've been inappropriate and probably uncomfortable for Zeldin if we proceeded with the event while he was simultaneously voting against something that our allies have been clamoring for," one unnamed source told The Hill.
