Donald Trump's personal lawyer on Wednesday forwarded an email equating Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee with America's first president and Revolutionary War hero Gen. George Washington, The New York Times reported.

John Dowd, who heads up Trump's personal legal team, sent the email to conservative journalists, government officials and friends in an apparent attempt to defend the president against criticism he has received from Democrats and Republicans alike after saying some of the protesters in Charlottesville, Virginia, over the weekend were "good people," and not part of the white nationalist movement.

In a fiery exchange with reporters Tuesday, Trump defended his words, saying if statues of Confederate leaders such as Lee are removed from public places, those for George Washington and Thomas Jefferson might be next.

The email forwarded by Dowd was titled "The Information that Validates President Trump on Charlottesville" and included lines such as, "You cannot be against General Lee and be for General Washington, there literally is no difference between the two men."

Among the arguments to back up the thesis: "Both owned slaves," "Both rebelled against the ruling government," and "Both saved America" — Lee supposedly by surrendering rather than continuing to fight through guerrilla tactics.

Dowd received the email Tuesday night, the Times reported, and Wednesday forwarded it to more than two dozen people, a top Homeland Security official, The Wall Street Journal editorial page, and journalists at Fox News and The Washington Times.

One of the people who received the email shared it with The New York Times.

When contacted by the paper, Dowd did not deny sending the email, saying, "You're sticking your nose in my personal email? People send me things. I forward them," before hanging up the phone.

The author of the original email, according to the Times, was Jerome Almon, who operates government conspiracy websites and says Islamic terrorists have infiltrated the FBI.

Almon, who is black, said in the email that Black Lives Matter is being run by terrorists as well.

Almon told the Times the email was a follow-up to a telephone call he had with Dowd last week, and he hoped Trump himself would read it.

"I don't believe the president is getting the correct advice or proper information," he said.

"Someone reading what I sent to Dowd will view Robert E. Lee differently."
