Rep. Boebert Has Emergency Surgery for Blood Clot in Leg

By    |   Wednesday, 03 April 2024 10:39 AM EDT

Colorado Rep. Lauren Boebert underwent emergency surgery to remove a blood clot and was diagnosed with May-Thurner syndrome, the Republican announced, the New York Post reported on Wednesday.

Boebert went to the hospital after she had major swelling in her upper left leg and underwent a CT scan, where "doctors found an acute blood clot and diagnosed her with May-Thurner Syndrome, which is a rare condition that disrupts blood flow," according to a Facebook statement from her campaign.

Doctors performed surgery on Boebert on Tuesday to remove the blood clot and add a stent in order to restore the flow of blood by opening up the blocked vein.

Her doctors told CBS News Colorado that Boebert is expected to make a full recovery, explaining that "patients with May-Thurner syndrome who undergo the procedure to restore blood flow are able to live and work just as they have in the past after a brief recovery."

Boebert thanked her medical staff "for their great care and providing helpful insight on my recent diagnosis," and said she was looking forward to making a full recovery and returning to Congress "to continue fighting for Colorado."

Although the cause of Boebert's diagnosis is unknown, her campaign said that "dehydration, travel, and extended periods of sitting" were cited as potential factors.

There has been no timeline announced for Boebert returning to Washington, D.C., following her surgery, which came as she runs for Colorado's 4th District seat in the upcoming November election.
