Laura Ingraham Looks to Renew Reagan-Inspired PAC

Nationally syndicated radio host Laura Ingraham is leading efforts to rebirth a political action committee spearheaded by conservative principles embraced by President Ronald Reagan.

Ingraham, who was a speechwriter during the Reagan administration, will serve as national chairman of Citizens for the Republic.

"We find our country in a very similar place in America today," says Ingraham, who hosts the "The Laura Ingraham Show" and is a contributor for ABC News. She is also frequently seen as the guest host of Fox News Channel's "The O'Reilly Factor."

"In order for our movement to grow, we need leaders who understand conservatism," she said in a statement. "Its principles must be properly articulated, taught, and advocated. It's time to recapture and renew conservatism, not re-brand or remake conservatism as some establishment Republicans want. We know why liberals are wrong."

Ingraham, a mother of three and the author of several bestselling books, said in a video that the PAC was "dedicated to restoring, not re-making, America."

"The America we love stands for strong values, smart national defense and respect for the Constitution. That's the spirit of conservatism," she said.

"This is our moment," she added in urging followers to join the group's grassroots advocacy and education movement. "America again."

The CFTR, founded in 1977, became by 1978 "the largest independent PAC in America," supporters noted in a news release Monday.

"Through CFTR, Reagan helped conservative candidates and fought the Carter Administration on the Panama Canal Treaties, the SALT II Treaties and the expansion of government," they said in announcing Ingraham's new role.

"Reagan took the tired, run-down GOP and turned it into a vibrant political force which drew sustenance from the millions of conservative Americans who believed in these principles. Reagan was, of course, elected by an overwhelming majority in 1980 and transformed America," they said.
