The only female member of the House GOP with a minority background indicated Thursday the gains seen under President Donald Trump are too big to ignore — and she might back him in his 2020 re-election effort.
Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler, R-Wash., whose father is of Mexican heritage, told The Daily Caller and other news organizations she is open to backing Trump. He won her district, Washington's 18th, in 2016.
"With the passage of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, [in] my district, that unemployment number is remarkable," she said. "And it's the first time — especially among women, especially among minorities . . . among the disabled — that those numbers are at an all-time low, and they now have the ability to hunt jobs."
Beutler has spoken out against Trump in the past, including earlier this year when he declared a national emergency to secure funds to build a border wall between the United States and Mexico.
"Has my opinion on him as a person changed? No. Would I do his job the way he's doing it? No," she said Thursday. "But my district did vote for him, and I think one of the biggest mistakes people are going to make is not respecting their voters."
Beutler recently told The Columbian, a newspaper in Vancouver, Washington, she opposes the White House's move not to cooperate with House Democrats' impeachment inquiry of Trump amid claims he used his office for political reasons by calling on foreign governments to investigate 2020 presidential candidate Joe Biden.
