President Donald Trump asked his economic adviser Larry Kudlow earlier this summer to work on bilateral trade deals rather than agreements with several nations, and one result of that could be the pending trade deal between the United States and Mexico, Kudlow said Monday night.

Kudlow, the director of the National Economic Council, told Fox News' Laura Ingraham that Trump just wants free trade.

"The president told me probably two months ago, he said I am sick of this multilateral stuff, he said, you go out there, and tell folks that I want to do bilateral [trade deals,]" Kudlow said.

"Much simpler, much more direct, and I did, and we took some heat from it and it paid off. China's not paying off,  Mexico paid off, we'll see about Canada. We got the [European Union] cooking also."

Kudlow said Trump's tough talk on trade, which has ruffled quite a few feathers in the U.S. and across the globe this year, is all by design.

"Trump is a free trader. He wants to get to the free trade, no tariffs, no non-tariff barriers, no subsidies," Kudlow said. "That is his goal, but you have to be tough to get to there."

Kudlow also touched on the U.S. threat to impose auto tariffs on Canada if a trade deal cannot be reached with America's northern neighbor.
