Lara Trump told Newsmax on Thursday the indictment of her father-in-law, former president Donald Trump, by a Manhattan grand jury is not "a prosecution but a persecution of a man they have never liked."
"People not just on the left in America, but in the establishment … didn't like that a billionaire businessman from New York City, Donald Trump, could come in with no political backing, with no political experience, not need lobbyists, not need special interest groups, not need that establishment and yet he could become president of the United States," Trump, who is married to the former president's son Eric, told "Rob Schmitt Tonight."
"He could expose them all. They hated him from Day One."
Trump became the first former U.S. president to face criminal charges when a grand jury empaneled by Democrat Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg in January voted to indict him on charges regarding a $130,000 payment former Trump attorney Michael Cohen paid to porn actress Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election to silence her about an alleged affair she had with Trump in 2006.
Trump has repeatedly denied having an affair with Daniels.
Lara Trump said Bragg should be focusing more on the problems in New York City instead of the former president. She said she used to live there but moved because crime is running rampant.
"No one wants to live in the city anymore, and yet this is where the taxpayer money is going," she said. "This is where the energy and focus is going, and everyone knows it has nothing to do with actually pursuing a crime.
"It has everything to do with making sure that Donald Trump never ends up back in the White House. That is their fear because he exposed all of them the first time around, and they are terrified of the job he will do if he gets in for a second term."
Trump said the indictment will ultimately backfire on Bragg and Democrats.
"The problem is that people see this, and they know our constitutional republic is slipping away," she said. "If you allow this to happen, they're going to come out and vote for Donald Trump."
