Clinton insider Lanny Davis said he agrees with President Donald Trump that ex-FBI Director James Comey should have been fired, but he has different reasons than the president did.

"I think he should have been fired because he thinks he gets to choose which rules to follow and which rules not," Davis, a friend of Hillary Clinton's who became special counsel to former President Bill Clinton when he was in office, told Fox News' "Fox & Friends."

"Why? Because is he a narcissist who gets to decide who is right and who is wrong rather than following the rules."

However, Trump fired Comey "because he was troubled about the Russian investigator," said Davis, "and I think that was the wrong reason."

Davis was on the morning program to promote his new book "The Unmaking of the President 2016," in which he claims Comey cost Clinton the 2016 race.

Davis noted that Clinton was ahead in a RealClearPolitics poll by 5.9 percent on the morning of Oct. 28, 2016, but then Comey released his letter to Congress stating that Clinton emails had been found on the laptop of former Rep. Anthony Weiner, the husband of Clinton aide Huma Abedin.

On Nov. 6, two days from the election, Comey wrote another letter to cancel out the one he'd written just days before, to pull back on his claims.

"Remember, James Comey doesn't have to follow the rules," said Davis. "He gets to decide what's right. His new book is talking about a higher loyalty. Do you know what that loyalty is? To himself, not to the policies of the Justice Department."

Davis Monday also discussed the Democratic Party's turn to the left, including California Democratic delegates who refused to back Sen. Dianne Feinstein "one of the great progressives in the history of the Democratic Party" for not being liberal enough.

"Dianne Feinstein should be primaried," he said. "That's good for politics. It's good for the Democratic Party."

He also noted that he does not believe that former presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders would support pushing someone like Feinstein out for not being progressive enough, that would help Trump.
