Former FBI Director James Comey did "far more" to keep Hillary Clinton from winning the 2016 election than to try to stop President Donald Trump, Lanny Davis, the lawyer who served as special counsel in President Bill Clinton's administration, argued Tuesday.
"The [Devin] Nunes memo and the conspiracy that Republicans are now trying to sell, that the FBI is a left-wing, pro-Clinton conspiracy, are you kidding?" Davis told MSNBC's "Morning Joe."
"In fact, the FBI's a great institution. Donald Trump is attacking the institution of the FBI rather than individual members who hurt Hillary Clinton far more than they did [Trump]."
Davis' new book, "The Unmaking of the President 2016: How FBI Director James Comey Cost Hillary Clinton the Presidency," came out this week.
Davis displayed charts showing how Clinton's trendline was up until the morning of Oct. 28, 2016, the day Comey sent his letter to Congress, saying the FBI had "learned of the existence of emails that appear to be pertinent to the investigation" into the the private email server Clinton had been using while she was secretary of state.
The story ended up dominating the news until just two days before the election, when Comey disclosed there was nothing new found in the emails.
"Without the Comey letter, she wins by 332 electoral votes," Davis said. "It's simply math."
It is also ironic outgoing FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe has been blamed for bias against Trump because he sat on the email story for a month without reporting it, Davis said. He also advised Comey to send the letter that eventually turned the election around.
"I know the FBI had the information in early October," he said. "They could have done it within six days."
