Sen. Lamar Alexander will not attend the Republican National Convention, The Hill reports.
The Tennessean is the second GOP senator to announce they will skip the convention.
"Senator Alexander is an honorary chair of the Tennessee Trump campaign, but he will not be attending the convention because he believes the delegate spots should be reserved for those who have not had that privilege before as he has had," Alexander's office said in a statement on Tuesday.
On Monday, Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, told reporters he would skip the RNC because coronavirus cases are on the rise.
"I’m not going to go. And I’m not going to go because of the virus situation," Grassley told Iowa reporters on a conference call.
The convention was moved from Charlotte, North Carolina to Jacksonville, Florida. North Carolina officials wouldn’t permit the event to take place without virus mitigation measures in place.
Florida has seen a surge in new virus cases. On July 4, the state reported 11,458 new cases, which was an all-time single-day high for the state.
