Rep. Raúl Labrador, an Idaho Republican and tea party supporter who’s exiting Congress next year, has issued a tough assessment of time in Washington D.C.

"This is a place that just sucks your soul,” Labrador, who has represented the Gem State’s District 1 since 2011, told Politico.

"I thought [the Tea Party] was a revolution. I thought we were going to completely change the way that Washington worked.

"Within one week—I’m not exaggerating—I saw a large majority of my class saying, essentially, 'Whatever you need us to do, we will do.' And I was sick inside."

Labrador, who opted not to seek another House term to instead run for governor of Idaho in the 2018 election – a quest he lost in the Republican primary to Idaho Lieutenant Governor Brad Little – says today’s GOP is "on a pretty thin thread right now."

“The establishment invited this insurgency by not listening to the American people. It started during the Bush years,” Labrador, 50, said to Politico.
