Former Sen. Bob Dole, R-Kan., on Monday endorsed Gov. Jeff Colyer in the state's GOP gubernatorial primary — hours after President Donald Trump backed secretary of state Kris Kobach.

In a tweet, the 1996 GOP presidential nominee praised Colyer as "our best choice to win tomorrow AND in the fall."

Dole's focus on Colyer's chances in November was seen as a dig at Trump — and underscored the concern by Republicans that Kobach could alienate more centrist voters, costing the GOP the general election in a reliably red state, The Hill reported.

Dole was the only former GOP presidential nominee who supported Trump through the 2016 election.

Kobach has gained a national profile for his hard-line immigration stance, efforts to pass voter ID laws nationwide, and service as vice chairman of Trump's now-disbanded commission to investigate alleged voter fraud in the 2016 election.

Colyer, the former lieutenant governor, took the oath of office Feb. 1 after Trump nominated former GOP Gov. Sam Brownback to a State Department post.

According to the Capital-Journal, a recent GOP polling firm survey found Kobach and Colyer tied, each getting the support of 32 percent of likely GOP primary voters.
