McCarthy Blames Dems for McConnell Canceling Recess

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., on Wednesday said Senate Democrats are to blame for losing their own August recess, as they have pushed to hold back too many bills and to block President Donald Trump's nominees.

"If you look at the cloture votes just on the nominees, take the last six presidents and the total number was 24 combined," McCarthy told Fox News' "America's Newsroom."

"They had 100. They have delayed everything."

Republicans might have the majority, but Democrats in the Senate use "the rules to stop everything, as they've done with the nominees for the president," McCarthy said.

"[The House] had passed 12 appropriation bills to fund the entire government, and the [Senate] Democrats vote to block, not against the bill but for them to even to come up to be debated," McCarthy said. "To me that's just trying to stop everything. It was the Democrat [Sen. Chuck] Schumer who shut the government down . . . McConnell is right to push Schumer, and he's upset because it will be humid, and they haven't done their work and have 503 house bills to take up."

McCarthy also discussed Tuesday's California primary, which saw Republican businessman John Cox and Democratic Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom coming out at the top of the races to square off for governor in November.

The state's high gas tax alone could push Cox over Newsom this fall, McCarthy said.

"If John Cox just simply ran on repealing the gasoline tax, I want to see how the Democrats defend that as they got recalled over it," he said.

He also noted "Republicans are getting the job done," and he has faith in the party's chances for that reason.

"We have the lowest unemployment for the last 50 years," he said. "Only seven months in the last 50 years has unemployment been under 4 percent. We just did that the last two months. Look at starting a new business, it's at the highest level of people thinking the opportunity is now. This is some of the best economy we have seen in our lifetime."
