President Donald Trump's meetings with Republican House and Senate leaders at Camp David last week are clear evidence that the claims made in a new controversial book about him are "garbage," House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy said Monday.

"If anyone was sitting in those meetings they would know what garbage the book is," the California Republican, who was part of the meetings, told Fox News' "Fox & Friends" program, adding that he never heard Trump mention Michael Wolff's book, "Fire and Fury," once.

"Here we have, we have a four-hour meeting, we would go to dinner and another meeting, we would come back with a national security meeting," McCarthy said. "The questions the president would ask, how intuitive on where we are around the world, I don't know where the man [Wolff] comes with the fiction."

He added that anyone who has been around Trump in action also would not believe Wolff's claims of the president's mental instability.

"You're going to explain to me that the first president in 30 years able to pass tax reform is anything like what that book tries to make up," McCarthy said. "No, his mind was on what is best for the American public and how we push and drive this Congress and this Senate to get there."

The tax reform legislation that Trump signed into law was just the beginning of America's comeback, McCarthy also said Monday.

"Now, in 2018, you want to complete that job," he said. "More than a million Americans, more than $900 million has been handed out because of that bill. But what's even more important that I notice was just the other day, Baltimore Gas and Electric, you know how cold it is, they got $82 million of savings that they will pass onto rate customers that they're going to lower rates."

Republicans want to build on the tax bill, and to focus on more economic growth, McCarthy continued.

"You've got unemployment at a 17-year low, so we are going to have a problem with making sure we get enough people into the workforce, able-bodies and others," said McCarthy, and how there can be help from training that people need to get good jobs.

Infrastructure also is an important matter coming up, because lawmakers need to be sure America is being rebuilt as it grows, said McCarthy.

"We looked at the opioid epidemic across the country," he continued. "We have to be able to solve that. Then, most importantly rebuilding our military, it's been devastated by the cuts that have gone through on the Obama administration."

The first priority is funding the government by the Jan. 19 deadline, which could have already happened except for the threat from House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi to shut down the government if an agreement was not agreed on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

"We want to make sure we are funding the military," said McCarthy. "There should be no politics played with men and women in uniform. We are not waiting for them to make that happen. I will be in a meeting tomorrow in the White House. We want to solve DACA, but to solve DACA and make sure you're not back here in the future, you have to get border security, you have to do something with chain migration."
