Rep. Brady: Lawmakers Close to 'Bold, Pro-Growth' Tax Reform

Tax reform legislation likely will be done this year, as lawmakers are getting close to a "very bold, pro-growth" measure that will "leapfrog American back into the lead," Rep. Kevin Brady said Thursday.

"The focus is completely on delivering this year and we know that's aggressive," the Texas Republican, who is part of the "Big Six" team that has been negotiating a tax plan behind closed doors for months, told Fox News' "America's Newsroom" host Bill Hemmer. "We are attempting and I think we'll do it this year."

Brady said members of the group, while meeting with President Donald Trump this week, also talked about Hurricane Harvey and the threat looming from Hurricane Irma in Florida.

"I'm really proud of how our Texans came together on Harvey," said Brady. "We couldn't do that from without help from every state in the country. Bill, can I just tell America thank you for all that you've done?"

Meanwhile, returning to the tax code discussion, Brady said the group is working on creating a code that is simple enough that Americans will be able to file their taxes on a postcard.

"We're making sure our local businesses, large or small, keep more of what they earn so they can compete and win anywhere in the world, including here at home, and so we've got an opportunity to jumpstart the economy and grow wages for every American," said Brady.

The president, he continued, is "right on target" with his comments that the nation's tax system has become a barrier to economic recovery.

"When he is out there talking about tax reform and this monster of a tax code America is saddled with, people listen, so I love him out there making this case," said Brady. "I know at the White House he is all in on this. It's his signature issue and I'm telling you we're focused on delivering it for the American people."

Brady said that he will not read very much into Trump's deal with Democrats to extend the debt ceiling for three months, after Republicans wanted an 18-month extension.

"Making sure our hurricane victims get their aid when they need it and making sure America pays its debt is never a partisan issue," said Brady. "The president is reaching that direction. I think longer is better because it creates certainty going forward. It is good for the economy but look, it doesn't change our timetable on tax reform. Certainly not with the president, with the House and the Senate, and so we're just moving forward."
