Officials: Kerry Taps Former Sen. Feingold for Africa Post

Tuesday, 18 June 2013 11:30 AM EDT

Russ Feingold, a former Democratic senator from Wisconsin, is expected to be named the U.S. special envoy for Africa Great Lakes region, anonymous sources say.

A U.S. official and a congressional aide say Secretary of State John Kerry on Tuesday is to announce that Feingold will assume the post focused, in part, on resolving turmoil in the Congo. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to disclose the information on the record before Kerry's announcement.

Congo's government and rebels have been negotiating in Uganda since December under a regional bloc called the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region.

The talks often have been set back by accusations over who is responsible for rampant violence in Congo's North Kivu province.
