Sen. Kennedy: Proposals on Shutdown Without Border Wall 'Dead'

By    |   Friday, 18 January 2019 04:33 PM

Nobody wants the government to remain shut down, but President Donald Trump is resolute and will continue to refuse any proposals that don't include funding for a border wall, Sen. John Kennedy said Friday.

"Some of my colleagues in Congress are running around, I don't mean any disrespect, I'm glad they're talking, but some of them are running around like sprayed roaches, coming up with deals to bring to him, none of which include a border wall," the Louisiana Republican told Fox News "Overtime Outnumbered."

"If they bring him a proposal that doesn't have a border wall, that's dead," Kennedy added. "He is resolute and I don't see that he's going to change his mind."

Senate Republicans, meanwhile, are united behind Trump, and no bill will come to the Senate floor unless Majority Leader Mitch McConnell knows Trump will sign it, said Kennedy.

Trump also was right for refusing to allow Pelosi and other Democratic leaders the use of a military plane for their planned trip to Afghanistan, Brussels and Egypt on Thursday, Kennedy said.

"[Pelosi] is a smart, talented lady," said Kennedy. "She's Speaker of the House, but doggone it, we went through this before when the president stayed in Washington over Christmas and she went to Hawaii...she needs to be in Washington to negotiate."
