Conway: Americans Support the Flag, Trump's NFL Stance

Most Americans support President Donald Trump's position against NFL players who kneel in protest during the national anthem because they also support the flag and all it stands for, presidential counselor Kellyanne Conway said Wednesday.

"Look, about 12 percent of the NFL players took a knee and protested the other day," Conway told Fox News' "Fox and Friends" program. "That means 88 percent did not . . .  the men and women who have sacrificed on behalf of our freedoms so that you and I could have this conversation this morning and some gave the ultimate sacrifice."

Trump is open to speaking with NFL team owners and players about the issue, as he's always open to speak to any number of people, Conway said.

"He has probably held more meetings, round tables, Oval Office visits in his first eight months than many presidents have done in a much longer period of time," Conway said. "Remember, this should not be seen as a clash of personalities. This is about principles. Is not about politics. This is about what binds us as a nation."

She also denied contentions from some that the president's focus on the NFL is a distraction, pointing out that during his comments from the Rose Garden on Tuesday, he said he can do "many things at once.

Trump has been working on healthcare and will reveal a tax reform plan on Wednesday, Conway said.

She said she's seen Trump's speech on tax reform, and it "really lays out his vision and one that he has been working on with the Congress."

Americans spend six billion hours a year, when they could be doing other things, just complying with the current tax code, Conway said.

"The code currently favors the wealthy and privileged and well-connected who can hire attorneys and accountants that can help them navigate and take advantage of these deductions and credits, many of which go away in the Donald Trump legislative plan for tax overhaul," Conway said. "Secondly, just to reduce the rates and to make sure to reduce the brackets from 7 to 3 and reduce the rates on the middle class so they actually get a pay raise. This is not just a tax bill. It's a jobs bill."
