Conway: Pence Begins Meetings on Obamacare Wednesday

CNBC's "Squawk Box"

Vice President-elect Mike Pence will begin meeting with congressional Republicans Wednesday to discuss repealing and replacing Obamacare, on the same day President Barack Obama plans to talk with House Democrats about how to save his legacy legislation, incoming presidential counselor Kellyanne Conway said Tuesday.

"The Affordable Care Act has done some good things, like covering pre-existing conditions," Conway conceded on CNBC's "Squawk Box." "There are people who have health insurance who didn't before. But the fact is many Americans feel harmed by the Affordable Care Act."

The healthcare law, she said, resulted in Republicans gaining seats on both the state and local level, as Americans become more angry and upset over Obamacare.

"There are many people who say, 'I thought was going to be covered, but all I got was two 25-hour jobs a week,'" Conway said. "There are people paying higher premiums. We have fewer choices, lower quality, less access, higher costs. That wasn't supposed to be health reform."

There are several changes that could come into play, including allowing customers to buy insurance across state lines, and allowing for the expansion of health savings amounts, Conway said.

"There are a lot of great, innovative ideas in repealing and replacing, but we're already there," Conway said. "In Palm Beach last week, he met with the head of the Mayo Clinic and Cleveland Clinic. This is serious stuff."

Early Tuesday morning, Trump tweeted Obamacare "just doesn't work:"

And quoted a Democratic governor who said Obamacare is "lousy":

Also appearing on NBC's "Today" show, Conway said Trump has "committed to retaining" the parts of Obamacare that work, and has received a great deal of counsel over the issue.

"He's committed to repealing and replacing Obamacare to something more fair," Conway said. "We hear about this and veterans care."
