Republican Sen. Kelly Ayotte on Wednesday said she wouldn't want her daughter in the same room as Donald Trump or Bill Clinton.

"I wouldn't want my daughter in the room with any of them," the New Hampshire lawmaker said, during a radio interview with WNTK 99.7 host Keith Hanson.

Hanson asked if she would have wanted her daughter to hear the conversation that Trump had engaged in 2005 with an "Access Hollywood" reporter in which the GOP nominee made lewd comments about women.

"I think we all know the answer to that," she replied.

Ayotte has since withdrawn her support for Trump when the video surfaced.

"At any point in time would you want your 16-year-old daughter in a room with Bill Clinton?" Hanson asked.

"You know, the point of this, that, you know, why would I want my daughter in the room with them?" Ayotte responded. "You know, and this isn't about my daughter. I love my daughter and, you know, obviously being a mom is very important to me."

President Barack Obama's rapid response director responded to Ayotte on Twitter:

Hanson then said he was just trying to get at the character of the candidates.

"It's hard, I mean, you know, for us to get to a point in this country where character doesn't matter," Ayotte said. "That seems too unfortunate for me. I think character does matter when I think about my children."

Ayotte once called Trump a "role model" for her daughter, but later said she misspoke. She will write in Trump's running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, for president.

She is up for reelection against New Hampshire Gov. Maggie Hassan.
