If special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation is a “witch hunt” as President Donald Trump has frequently charged, the probe has “found a coven at this point,” former acting Solicitor General Neal Katyal said Sunday.
In remarks on NBC News’ “Meet The Press,” the Georgetown University Law Center professor pointed to the indictments of some Trump associates — including former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and the president’s ex-lawyer Michael Cohen.
"So if this is a witch hunt, Mueller's found a coven at this point," he added.
He added the special counsel may possibly have found evidence of an election conspiracy as well.
“We already have some of that information,” he said. “Mueller has indicted Roger Stone for conspiring with Wikileaks. He indicted [campaign aide George] Papadopoulos for lying about meeting with Russian agents before the e-mail scandal became known in April 2016.
“We're seeing the outlines of a Mueller report that looks like he's alleging some sort of conspiracy,” he maintained.
"It's a really thin read to say, 'Oh, you've been indicted for obstruction of justice about Russian collusion and not the Russian collusion itself’,” he added. “I mean, some people denigrate these as so-called process crimes. But anyone in law enforcement knows, these are really crucial crimes.”
