Gov. John Kasich on Sunday denounced President Donald Trump’s decision to stop funding some healthcare subsides, saying the move ignores the impact on “hardworking Americans.”

In an interview on NBC News’ “Meet The Press,” the Ohio Republican and former presidential primary contender lashed out at the administration and GOP lawmakers who’ve been supportive of the cut to subsidies.

“What are they doing?” he asked. “Are they just passing these things and people are praising what the president did because of politics? I mean, do they understand the impact that this has on families, on people?”

Kasich rebuked Trump’s description of the subsidies as a “windfall” for insurance companies.

“These were payments to insurance companies to make sure that hardworking Americans, who don't make a lot of money, can have their co-payments taken care of,” he said.

Though he refused to accuse Trump of purposeful sabotage of Obamacare — “I can't read people's minds,” he said — he did call the efforts “a shame on everybody.”

"And who gets hurt? People,” he said. “And it's just… outrageous."

The governor is still refusing to rule out another run for president in 2020, asserting, “I don’t know what I am going to do tomorrow.”

“The other day, with all the chaos going on, my wife said to me one morning, she said, ‘You know, John, I wish you were president.’ That's how I knew the country was in trouble.”

It isn’t the first time Kasich has hinted there’s truth to the rumors he’s considering a gambit for the White House in 2020, potentially defecting against his own party in the process. Earlier this month, Kasich told CNN he could see the day when he could no longer support the GOP.
