A potential Democratic successor to President-elect Donald Trump won her Senate race in California this week.

According to The Huffington Post, Kamala Harris has served in public office for several years, including as the state's attorney general starting in 2011. The website claims she has similarities to President Barack Obama and could be the Democratic Party's next hope of becoming the country's first female president.

Harris, reports the Post, is the second black woman to be elected to the Senate — Carol Moseley Braun of Illinois was the first, having served one term from 1993-1999. Harris' history of campaigning for criminal justice reform, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the Black Lives Matter movement, and fighting for marriage rights of same-sex couples would make her a good choice for Democrats as they recover from Hillary Clinton's loss this week, the Post writes.

Harris took a strong stance this week against Trump's plans to clamp down on illegal immigration.

"This issue of how we are treating our immigrants, and in particular our undocumented immigrants, is one of the most critical issues facing our country," Harris said, reports the Los Angeles Times. "We are not going to be achieving who we say we are as a country if we attack our community members, our neighbors, our friends and our colleagues."
