Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, on Sunday blasted the impeachment effort by House Democrats as a blatant attempt to “cancel” former President Donald Trump.
In an interview on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures,” Jordan argued Democrats “didn’t want a chance for him being on the [2024] ballot.”
“They were trying to cancel the guy that 74 million people voted for," he said.
"They were so upset about the president that they were willing to ignore the due process and ignore the evidence and at the last minute try to call witnesses when that made absolutely no sense to do so,” he railed. “This is how focused and obsessed they've been.”
“How can you impeach somebody for engaging in speech protected by the Constitution as a private citizen?” he added. “So engaging in speech protected by the Constitution, the very document we take an oath to uphold. That's what the Democrats attempted to do.”
According to Jordan, the reason why Senate Democrats pulled back after a vote was held to call witnesses in the Senate impeachment trial was because they knew House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., would be called as a witness.
“We would have called the sergeant at arms, [former Capitol Police] Officer [Steven] Sund… and called Speaker Pelosi because ultimately she's the person in charge of Capitol Hill,” Jordan said.
Jordan said he and other lawmakers have gotten death threats during the impeachment effort.
“This cancel culture is so dangerous,” he argued.
“On the day we had the impeachment vote on the House floor, I told my Democrat colleagues, I said the cancel culture won't just stop with Republicans. It will come after all of us in the end and that's why we all have to push back… If we don't stand up … for the Constitution… it will only get worse. This is the number one issue for the country to address today.”
