Rep. John Yarmuth, D-Ky., noting he supports the House impeachment inquiry, said it may not be beneficial for Democrats to have President Donald Trump removed from office.
Yarmuth, the chairman of the House Budget Committee, made his remarks during a Monday interview on Hill.TV.
"As much as I believe that President Trump should be removed from office and represents an imminent threat to our Democracy and our national security and many other things, politically — it's probably not a good thing to get rid of him," Yarmuth said.
In the event Trump is eventually removed from office, Yarmuth predicted Republicans would turn away from Vice President Mike Pence and put up another candidate for president in 2020.
"I don't think the Republicans would nominate Mike Pence," he said. "I think they would nominate somebody like Nikki Haley. Somebody who would be very, very tough for a Democrat to beat."
