Republican Sen. John Thune on Thursday warned his counterparts in the House to tread carefully with the controversial memo they're poised to make public, adding that Senate Republicans should review it first, The Hill reports.

"I think the Senate Intelligence Committee needs to see it, for sure. Sen. (Richard) Burr would like to see it and hasn’t been able to yet," Thune told reporters, The Hill reported.  "There are important national security considerations they need to weigh, and hopefully they’re doing that."

Burr, R-N.C., is chair of the Senate intel panel.

House intel chair Devin Nunes authored the contentious memo that reportedly accuses the Justice Department of abusing the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) in its investigation into former Trump campaign aide Carter Page.

The committee voted to make the memo public, sending it to the desk of President Donald Trump, pitting House Republicans and Trump against the FBI, DOJ and, now, Senate Republicans.

"They have to take into consideration what the FBI is saying and if there are things that need to be redacted, I think they need to pay careful attention to what our folks who protect us have to say about how this bears on our national security," Thune said.
