The spokesman for Russian president Vladimir Putin on Monday ripped Sen. John McCain for his "maniacal hatred toward our country," adding that he's thankful the Republican doesn't "shape foreign policy" for the U.S., TASS reported.

McCain "took the liberty of uttering insults on several occasions before, but this is probably for the first time ever that his words have gone way over the line of decency and departed from a tone appropriate for a statesmen of such a country as the United States," Dmitry Peskov told the Russian news agency.

McCain on Sunday took umbrage with the Russian foreign minister ever being in the Oval Office in the first place, telling Fox News that Sergey Lavrov "is the stooge of a thug and a murderer who used Russian precision weapons to strike hospitals in Aleppo, who has committed human rights issues all over the place."

Peskov wasn't pleased.

"Thank God, this gentleman is not the one who shapes or implements U.S. foreign policy," Peskov was quoted by TASS. "Therefore we will naturally avoid exaggerating the significance of these insulting and rude attacks or linking them with bilateral Russian-US relations somehow."

Lavrov and the Russian ambassador met with President Donald Trump at the White House two weeks ago in what has become infamous for what was allegedly discussed.

Trump, without the presence of American media, shared classified intelligence about ISIS with Lavrov and Sergey Kislyak that spooked his counterintelligence adviser Tom Bossert enough to make calls to the CIA and NSA.

Trump also allegedly called former FBI Director James Comey a "nut job" to the duo, saying terminating Comey relieved "great pressure" over investigation into Russia's meddling in the election.
