McConnell Doesn't Appear on Board to Rename Building After McCain

Despite bipartisan enthusiasm for renaming a Senate office building after the late Sen. John McCain, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell doesn’t appear to have embraced the plan just yet.

“We’ll be talking about the best way to honor Senator McCain,” McConnell said Monday — just after giving a speech memorializing the Arizona Republican on the Senate floor — when asked about the idea of renaming the Russell Senate Office Building, The Hill reported.

Pressed on the issue, McConnell didn’t respond and brushed by reporters and walked into his office, The Hill reported.

Meanwhile, Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, the No. 2 Senate Republican, said there’d likely be a "discussion" and suggested the Rules Committee could take up the issue, the Hill reported.

On the other side of the aisle, Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., is expected to offer a resolution on the name change, after suggesting it in the wake of McCain’s death Saturday.

The building is currently named after former Georgia Democratic Sen. Richard Brevard Russell, who opposed numerous efforts to pass civil rights legislation.

Schumer told reporters Monday he’d gathered some Republican support for his resolution but wasn’t sure when he’d try to move the matter, The Hill reported.

On Sunday, Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Arizona, said he’d support the Schumer resolution.
