Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., blasted fellow Republicans on Friday shortly before the release of a memo alleging political motives by the FBI and the Department of Justice against President Donald Trump, saying it only served Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"The latest attacks against the FBI and Department of Justice serve no American interests ― no party's, no president's — only Putin's," said McCain, HuffPost reported Friday.

"The American people deserve to know all the facts surrounding Russia's ongoing efforts to subvert our democracy, which is why special counsel Mueller's investigation must proceed unimpeded.

"Our nation's elected officials, including the president, must stop looking at this investigation through the lens of politics and manufacturing political sideshows. If we continue to undermine our own rule of law, we are doing Putin's job for him," McCain said.

House Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes, R-Calif., released the memo Friday after Trump declassified it. It alleges officials at the FBI and DOJ used bias against Trump's presidential campaign, which ultimately led to the appointment of special counsel Robert Mueller to investigate charges of collusion between aides working for then-candidate Trump and Russian officials.

"In 2016, the Russian government engaged in an elaborate plot to interfere in an American election and undermine our democracy," McCain added. "Russia employed the same tactics it has used to influence elections around the world, from France and Germany to Ukraine, Montenegro and beyond."

McCain suggested Russia's influence had succeeded in influencing political discord in the U.S. and claimed attacking the intelligence community was not the way to approach the issue.

On Thursday, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi sent a letter to House Speaker Paul Ryan claiming "Nunes' deliberately dishonest actions make him unfit to serve as chairman" and demanded that he be "removed immediately from his position."
