Sen. John Kennedy Friday said he didn't mean any disrespect toward House Speaker Nancy Pelosi by calling her "dumb" during a Louisiana rally for President Donald Trump earlier this week, but he does think what he said was "accurate."
"I think that what Speaker Pelosi is doing here is not only dumb but it's dangerous," the outspoken Louisiana Republican told Fox News' "America's Newsroom."
"It is a partisan impeachment, clearly. All impeachments are political. This one is 100% political and it will establish a new norm for America that I think is bad for us."
He said he understands that Trump is "not nature's best diplomat," but whether one likes him or not, "this process is rigged. This is like a professional wrestling smackdown. It is all scripted, and that's not right. It's just not fair."
Kennedy was cheered at the rally but came under fire from critics after saying about Pelosi, "it must suck to be that dumb."
"Due process should matter," said Kennedy Friday. "I think Speaker Pelosi intends to give the president a fair and impartial firing squad and she made up her mind before she saw the facts."
Meanwhile, Trump's impeachment will be the "first partisan" one in the history of the United States, said Kennedy, and he is worried it will "establish a new normal."
"Someday we'll have a Democratic president and then half of the country will be pushing us to impeach him or her," said Kennedy. "They will say well, you know, you did it to Trump, do it to the new president. I think that's dangerous."
