GOP Rep. John Kennedy Against Release of GOP Memo

The House Intelligence Committee should not release its memo containing allegations of abuses by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Justice Department if the memo includes classified details, Rep. John Kennedy, R-La., said.

"We can't let the politics of the moment cloud our judgment," Kennedy said Wednesday on CNN's "New Day." "If there's classified information in that memo, it shouldn't be released.

"My strong preference would be not to have either side put spin on it, go through the original material, and try to take out all the classified information."

Some Republicans say the memo points out what they say is bias against President Donald Trump in the FBI and Justice Department. Democrats say the memo is an attempt by Republicans to undermine the special counsel investigation into Russian interference and to protect Trump from the investigation.

Kennedy said he differs from some of his fellow Republicans.

"I trust the FBI," Kennedy said. "I think the vast majority of the members of the FBI are apolitical law enforcement, the best in the world.

"If they are allowed to get the facts and then present them to the American people, the American people are smart enough to figure it out for themselves," the congressman said.

Kennedy has been critical of actions taken in Congress before.

"Our country was founded by geniuses, but it's being run by idiots," Kennedy said Jan. 19.
