President Donald Trump demanded a housecleaning of the White House communications team and chief of staff John Kelly has signed off on a plan to fire an untold number of staffers, Politico reported.

The impending dismissals come in the weeks-long aftermath of the latest leak to wreak havoc on Trump's administration - the quip that who cares what Sen. John McCain thinks about Gina Haspel because "he's dying anyway."

Further, Politico reports that Trump met personally with the staffer who made the joke, Kelly Sadler, and asked her to identify the leakers in the communications office.

So, the White House is expected to ax some junior to mid-level staffers in the next few weeks to rein in the leaky office, Politico reported.

However, senior counselor Kellyanne Conway last week said it was "naïve" to think that leaks come only out of the communications team.

"This whole idea that leaks come from press and comms, only or at all, is pretty naïve, given the fact this is a pretty large complex of hundreds of hundreds of hundreds who have access to different information or sitting in meetings or their assistants certainly do," Conway said Friday.

Steps reportedly have been taken already to mitigate the leaks by reducing the amount of staffers who attend the daily communications meetings to a core group of advisers.
