Michigan Nominee John James: Trump Endorsement 'Icing on the Cake'

By    |   Wednesday, 08 August 2018 03:12 PM

John James, who took the nomination in Michigan's Republican Senate primary, called President Donald Trump's endorsement the "icing on the cake" for his victory, and credited him for taking a "leading effort" in helping to get voters out.

"The work is starting now," James, told Fox News' "America's Newsroom." "The first thing, I have to give glory to God for this amazing victory and the people in the state of Michigan who made their voices heard."

James will square off in November against incumbent Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow, and he said Wednesday he's "super excited" at the opportunity to hold her accountable for her record.

"Her numbers are plummeting because she is associated with the resistance," said James. "Debbie Stabenow cares more about resistance than results and more about obstruction than economic opportunity, and having someone like me who gets results from the battlefield to the boardroom. I'm a combat veteran who got the results of bringing my aircraft and men home safely. I'm a business leader growing my company and improving the economic situations of over 100 families in Michigan east of the Mississippi."

Stabenow, he added, votes with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer "95 percent of the time" and people in Michigan wonder if her obstructions will make their lives better.

James, a 2004 graduate of West Point, became a Ranger-qualified aviation officer and served in Operation Iraqi Freedom. He came back to Michigan in 2012 and currently serves as president of the family business, James Group International. According to his campaign website, James has taken the company from $35 million to $137 million in revenue and has created 100 jobs in Michigan and elsewhere.

If he wins in November, James will be the second black Republican senator, joining Sen. Tim Scott, R-S.C., but said Wednesday he does not have a black or a white message.

"Identity politics is the enemy of the state," he said. "I swore an oath to the Constitution of the United States of American against all enemies. By continuing to drive a wedge between what makes us great and focusing more on the arbitrary things that separate us, that is how folks like Sen. Stabenow and Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi continue to play the haves against the have nots. The blacks against the whites. The males against the females, to continue to retain their positions in Washington."

He said he takes away from his win that people will not be deceived.

"There are rural whites who have been dismissed by the Democratic Party as deplorable, urban blacks dismissed as disposable," he said. "People are in areas around the state of Michigan that look worse than the combat zones I was flying in. Sen. Stabenow has been an elected official for 43 years and been in Washington for 20 and as done precious little."
