The "urban-rural divide" is displayed in the argument over gun control, Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper said Tuesday on CNN's "New Day."

The Democratic governor said that those who live in urban areas need to learn more about those in rural areas and their ties to guns.

"People living in the urban-suburban areas, I think, have to go listen harder and understand better the relationship — a lot of people who hunt and live in the rural areas, they don't want someone in the cities coming in and telling them anything to do with their guns."

The governor said he reminds people that no one is calling for guns to be taken away.

"Pretty much every time I talk about gun safety, I try to say, no one's talking about taking away your guns. We're just trying to make sure that guns don't get in the hands of dangerous people," Hickenlooper said.

He said the National Rifle Association has inspired an "amazing level of loyalty" because of supporters' beliefs in the Second Amendment. "Clearly, there is something to do with people's Second Amendment rights and their relationship to their weapons that is very important to people all over the country."

At another point in the interview, Hickenlooper rejected the idea that universal background checks are not enforceable. "That's ridiculous … almost every Republican civic leader I know says universal background checks make perfect sense,"  he said.
