The No. 2 Republican in the Senate suggested Tuesday that President Donald Trump's administration is playing a "shell game" with the latest supplemental hurricane aid package, Roll Call reported.

Further, Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, is warning that the aid package could get pushed back to December.

"We frankly feel like this is part of a shell game that's going on with OMB, and that people keep saying, 'We want to help, we want to help,' and then it keeps getting kicked off to the next supplemental and the next omnibus, and the need is never fully addressed," Cornyn said.

The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) said it still intends on submitting a new aid package in mid-November, but Cornyn doesn't seem to be buying it.

"We believed that we had a commitment to do it in November, but now due to the press of other business, that's looking less likely," he said.

"And the idea of it is, I assume that they think they want to roll all of this into the Dec. 8 omnibus," Cornyn said. "There's a risk at some point you start putting so much stuff in the omnibus that we end up with a [continuing resolution], and we get nothing in terms of disaster relief."

Cornyn was one of several lawmakers to meet with Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, who was in Washington lobbying for an additional $61 billion aid package for rebuilding efforts in his state.

Cornyn — as well as Abbott — was unhappy with last week's $36.5 billion relief package that mostly helped Puerto Rico, calling it "inadequate" and saying he was "disappointed" in what the House passed; Texas had asked for nearly $19 billion alone.

However, Cornyn was mollified with the promise that Texas would benefit from the next supplemental package, the one he now fears won't get done until December.
